OECON's eCall test and development server certified for NG eCall
The product from OECON Products & Service GmbH, the ecall Test and Development Server, passed the tests in accordance with EN 17240:2024 chapter 7.6 column A (essential PSAP NG eCall tests) at the end of November.
Cetecom advanced GmbH successfully carried out the tests and issued an NG eCall certificate in accordance with EN 17240:2024.
In addition to the classic in-band eCall, the product is now also certified for NG eCall.
NG eCall (Next Generation eCall) is the new, mandatory EU standard for automatic vehicle emergency call systems from 2026/2027. It replaces outdated 2G/3G technology with modern 4G/LTE and 5G networks. Emergency calls will be transmitted to rescue control centers faster and with more data (e.g., location, direction of travel, vehicle type). This will make assistance more precise and much faster.
A permanently installed eCall system has been mandatory for all newly developed vehicle types in the EU since 2018. In the event of an accident, the system automatically dials the emergency number 112. At the same time, information about the accident location and the vehicle is transmitted. Until now, the emergency call system has used the 2G (GSM) or 3G (UMTS) mobile phone network standard.
The Next Generation (NG) eCall is now replacing the previous technology. From 2026, it will use modern 4G and 5G networks instead of the previous 2G/3G mobile networks. 4G and 5G networks are more reliable, have been rolled out across Europe, and will be available in the long term.
This does not change the emergency call process. The transmission process to the control center remains the same. Like the old eCall, the system automatically or manually triggers an emergency call (112) in the event of a serious accident and connects to the nearest emergency call center (PSAP).
Newly developed vehicle types (new type approvals) in the EU [passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (M1 and N1)] must be equipped with the new NG eCall from January 1, 2026. The NG eCall will become mandatory for all new vehicles from January 1, 2027.
