Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport and start drone flights at the research airport

Test: Drones monitor the fence at Braunschweig-Wolfsburg airport

  • Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport sees great potential for various uses
  • provides the complete solution for the release and future safe integration into controlled airspace
  • Close coordination with the responsible departments of the state government of Lower Saxony
  • More intensive use in regular operations planned at the airport

In bright sunshine, the starting signal was given on January 21, 2020 for close cooperation in the area of urban air mobility at the research airport. Flughafen Braunschweig-Wolfsburg GmbH and GmbH (Braunschweig) have carried out fully automated (BVLOS) drone missions for fence monitoring at the airport for the first time.

Michael Schwarz, Managing Director of Flughafen Braunschweig-Wolfsburg GmbH, is pleased about the new project at the research airport: “The use of drones is very interesting for us, because we can imagine the operation for different commercial and operational uses. Drone missions at the airport could improve work processes and save costs in the long term. ”For the test phase, it is particularly important to let the entire process chain take place for the first time – the necessary coordination with the tower and the traffic management is carried out.

For Michael Gieselmann, Managing Director of GmbH, it is the beginning of a long-term strategy. In Mr. Schwarz, we have found a partner who has recognized the added value and the benefits of drone missions at the airport and who would like to work with us to ensure that the unmanned and manned aviation is cooperatively and safely integrated. The Braunschweig location with the surrounding industry, SME and research partners as well as the Federal Aviation Office offers ideal conditions. Thanks to the close cooperative cooperation with the authorities in Hanover and all parties involved, this important milestone was reached, which will also give impulses for further projects beyond Braunschweig. GmbH, founded in December, bundles all drone activities within the OECON Group (Braunschweig). The existing competencies for software development as well as product and project management in the UAV area within the OECON group will be concentrated in the new company in the future. will operate a digital booking and management platform for drones and, together with partners in metropolitan regions, will offer its customers a large network of drones that is available locally. These can then be booked for individual drone missions for use on a case-by-case basis.

Areas of application supported by include: the exploration and assessment of the situation from the air for rescue workers, the monitoring of industrial site boundaries, the maintenance and inspection of infrastructure facilities and the recording of agricultural and forest areas.
